Following the 2015-2016 refugee reception crisis and the 2022 forced migration from Ukraine, European and North American societies have been putting in place various policies and programs to respond to the needs of the new residents. While Polish cities have relatively little experience with managing migration, German, Norwegian and even Czech cities have much longer traditions that we could learn from. Some of the policies have been implemented for decades or longer at the central and local levels, involving public, social and private actors as well as international organizations. These policies and programs include strategic documents targeting specific migrant populations, and central or local-level social policies mainstreamed to the needs of new residents. Some are based on bottom-up, while others – on top-down initiatives and programmes. These processes vary across more and less centralized or decentralized states.
Given the post-2022 forced migration from Ukraine to Poland and the challenges faced by Polish municipalities, it is helpful to examine the experiences of different countries in Europe and beyond, whose approaches to migration governance and migration/integration policies differ. Still, these countries’ experiences constitute valuable inspiration for the processes taking place now in Poland.
The aim of our next CMR and Migration Academy Webinar is to discuss international practices of migrant integration and inclusion in countries with longer and more extensive experience in managing migration than Poland. This webinar is co-organised by the Laboratory of Urban and Regional Migration Policies & Migration Policies Research Unit at the Centre of Migration Research of the University of Warsaw, the Migration Academy of the Migration Consortium, the Union of Polish Metropolises, and the Research Committee 46 “Migration and Citizenship” of the International Political Science Association (IPSA).
